More about Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome
Posted under General Health by DonSevere Acute Respiratory Syndrome, popularly abbreviated as SARS is a fairly new form of respiratory infection that has gripped several countries of America, Asia and Europe. It is a viral infection carried by a specific species of virus known as corona virus, popularly recognized as SARS – corona virus (CoV).
The disease is considered as airborne and can be easily caused due to direct association with an infected person. The longer you stay in contact with an infected person, the higher is the risk rate. It is also a sexually transmitted disease. It gets transmitted through transfusion of body fluids like blood, saliva etc. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome is followed by a long list of syndromes that mainly involves a high fever. Along with fever, the patient might experience generalized body pain, shortness of breath, cough etc.
Effective vaccines capable of protecting the masses from this highly infectious disease are not yet released; however, researches are actively progressing. The patients who are suspected to be infected by SARS or who are tested positive for corona virus should be immediately quarantined. Even the patients who have seemingly recovered from this disease should be kept in isolation for a period of at least 10 to 12 days.
Till today no specific drug or medicine for SARS has been discovered. Several antibiotics and antiviral drugs are used to treat the symptoms. Around 10 percent of the infected people have died until today; and hence government authorities of various countries are on a high alert to prevent the disease from spreading further.
